She was the Paris studio Dupré & Co., a quiet factory of delicate fans that married fashion to art, each fold of paper was hand-painted with tiny Parisian street scenes you could hide behind your wrist. The trick was the gilded sticks; they looked like solid gold until you tapped them and heard the rattle of a hidden fan blade. Hunt for their “Eventail plié” in a Parisian flea market and you’ll hold a pocket-sized 1890s postcard that still smells faintly of violet sachet.
