Peter von Halm

Peter von Halm liked to sneak tiny surprises into his prints, little jokes only the people of Helsinki would spot. His 1929 woodcut Santa Crocen kardinaali hides a cardinal’s face in a snow-lined window, as if someone just peeked out from inside a warm café on a freezing afternoon. You’ll find this piece tucked between the old postcards in the Ateneum’s print room; look for the red hat framed by frost.
