Gessho
Japan, 1772–1832
Gessho was a Japan artist.
Gessho was a Japanese painter active between 1772 and 1832. His artistic formation began under the guidance of Matsumura Goshun, from whom he received formal training. Later in his career, Gessho assumed the role of instructor, passing his knowledge to the next generation of artists. Among his notable students were Yamamoto Baiitsu, both of whom studied under his direction. These documented relationships highlight his position within the Japanese painting community of the early nineteenth century. His work and teaching contributed to the artistic landscape of his time, leaving a legacy defined by his role as both a student of Goshun and a teacher to Kinkoku and Baiitsu.
