Hans Schwab von Wertinger spent his life painting the Bavarian nobility so stiffly they looked like they’d sat too long in a cold throne room. He was the court artist for Duke Wilhelm IV, a job that meant turning armor and ermine into something grander than life. See his portrait of Duke Wilhelm in the Alte Pinakothek, every pearl in the lace is a tiny snowflake of light.
