A Groneman spent her days sketching at a diner on Route 66, where the waitresses called her "Pencil" for the way she never stopped drawing. She drew everything from diner coffee stains to the tornado-like swirls of napkin stacks, always in ink that bled through to the back of the page. If you like the raw, lived-in lines of someone’s daily eye, try her Untitled drawing from around 1960, it’s just a corner of a Formica counter, but you can almost taste the pie.
