A Finnish draftsman who left no dates behind, Salokivi made the 1895 Helsinki herring market his own with quick, rhythmic ink lines in Silakkamarkkinat, crowds, stalls and winter coats captured in one sheet. The drawing snaps the city’s daily pulse before electric lights took over, when fishwives called prices in a language of gestures.
