Francesc Comes painted in 1400, right when Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter was buzzing with gold-leaf altarpieces. He lined panels with tiny, stiff saints, but his trick was light, he caught it slipping across armor and silk folds like it was real. Look at Saint John the Baptist, Annunciation, Crucifixion on the museum wall: the gold halo isn’t flat, it’s hammered thin so the candlelight bounces off it sideways. That’s the detail that makes his work pop.
