Michal Klis

Michal Klis is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Michal Klis kept a studio in a cluttered flat above a Camden pub where the walls were covered in sketches of puppet shows. She spent years drawing the last generation of itinerant Punch & Judy men, meticulously inking their battered booths and the wild, stitched puppets that looked like they’d been sewn by moonlight. Her 1986 print of George Speaight’s collection turns those fragile relics into bold black-and-white silhouettes, as crisp as the puppet strings that once tied them to a child’s laughter.

Look it up, then see if you can spot the tiny mouse nibbling Speaight’s script in the corner.
