Yannis Mavidis

Yannis Mavidis is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki – MOMus.

Yannis Mavidis left Athens every summer to paint in the same half-ruined village house, where he kept a radio tuned to static just for the noise. He’d layer thick, sandy paint into landscapes that somehow looked both sun-bleached and damp, like the air had weight. His 1995 work Τοπίο (Greek for “landscape”) shows a single cypress against a pale sky, no people, no story, just a tree standing in the wrong light, as if the whole scene has been held underwater.

If you’re curious, look up Τοπίο and stare at it long enough and you’ll swear the cypress starts to breathe.
