Mikyö Dorje (1507-1554) was the Eighth Karmapa, the head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. A prolific scholar and teacher, he wrote extensively on Buddhist philosophy, grammar, poetics, and tantra, and traveled widely across Tibet and the Himalayan regions establishing teachings and monastic communities. He was also an active painter and patron of the arts and is linked to the development of the Karma Gardri style of Tibetan painting, which blended Chinese landscape elements with Tibetan religious imagery. He remains an influential figure in the religious and artistic history of the Karma Kagyu tradition.
