Papaver is a 1928 by Karl Blossfeldt, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows two black-and-white prints of a seed pod. The top one is whole, with a rough, textured shell and a long, thin tail. The bottom one is split open, revealing a spiral pattern inside. Both look like they’re made from ink on paper, with deep shadows and sharp lines. The artist focused on the pod’s natural shape and details, almost like a science drawing. These prints were made using a process called photogravure, which lets artists print fine, precise lines. Next, check out Blossfeldt, Karl to see more of his plant-focused work.
Karl Blossfeldt (13 June 1865 – 9 December 1932) was a German photographer and sculptor.
