About this work

This is a black-and-white photo of a carved relief showing three figures. One person is kneeling, holding up a limp body wrapped in cloth. Another stands beside them, reaching toward the head. The scene looks like it’s set in a shallow niche, with rough stone edges framing the group. The figures are simple but expressive, with strong lines showing their emotions. The cloth clings to the body in a way that makes it look heavy and real. Look up *lamentation of christ* to see how this scene fits into a bigger tradition.

The story of this work

Overview

The photograph, mounted on green card, depicts a deposition scene and is part of a collection bequeathed by William Kineton Parkes in 1938. Parkes, a novelist, art historian, and librarian known for his work on sculpture, solicited responses from sculptors in the 1920s through questionnaires, now preserved in the Archive of Art and Design. This image is one of many photographs sent to Parkes by the sculptors he contacted to complete his survey.
