a) After Douai (recto); b) Untitled (verso) is a 1918 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman carrying a child on her back, walking past simple buildings. Her clothes are loose and plain, her head covered. The background has a few small houses and a factory chimney, drawn lightly. The lines are rough and fast, like quick notes. The artist used ink and crayon to build up shadows with tiny crisscrossed lines. This makes the shapes pop without much color. Look up cross-hatching to see how this technique works.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
