History & Provenance
Jean-Louis Forain executed the oil-on-canvas painting The Artist's Wife Fishing in 1896. The work's early ownership is recorded in National Gallery of Art curatorial files as belonging to the artist's wife, Jeanne Bosc (Mme. Forain), and Armand François Paul des Friches, comte Doria, at the Château d'Orrouy. However, this provenance chain contains chronological uncertainties; if the painting was indeed owned by Comte Doria, it must have been completed before his death on May 7, 1896, yet it was absent from his posthumous collection sale in Paris in May 1899.
Following these early associations, the painting was sold by Arthur Tooth and Sons in London on December 10, 1965, to collector Paul Mellon of Upperville, Virginia. It remained in the Mellon collection until being gifted to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1985.
The painting is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it entered the collection by gift in 1985. Its presence in the museum’s catalogue confirms the current location. The work previously belonged to Mme. Forain and to Armand François Paul des Friches, comte Doria, and was sold to Paul Mellon on 10 December 1965 before the gift. It was exhibited at the Galerie Pigalle in Paris in 1931 as part of a Forain retrospective.
