About this work

This black-and-white print shows two robed monks standing side by side, their faces simple and serious. One holds a book, the other a candle. Below them, two smaller figures kneel—one with hands clasped, the other holding a bowl. The background is filled with bold, wavy lines that look like light or wind. The artist used a woodcut method, where the image is carved into wood and then printed. Notice how the lines are sharp and the shadows are deep, giving it a strong, graphic feel. Next, check out the technique: woodcut to see how this print was made.
