Deliberation (Beratung) is a 1913 ink by Christian Rohlfs, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows three men standing close together, their faces serious. The lines are sharp and uneven, giving it a rough, hand-carved look. One man in the center stands slightly apart, his arms crossed, while the other two lean in toward him. The artist used only black ink on a light background, making the shapes stand out starkly. The woodcut technique creates a textured, almost sketchy feel, like the image was carved quickly. Check out how artists use woodcut for bold, graphic prints.
Christian Rohlfs (November 22, 1849 - January 8, 1938) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the important representatives of German expressionism.
