Overview

The 1981 poster *Kyogen* by Shigeo Fukuda was created as part of a series of twelve designs commissioned to mark a UCLA Asian Performing Arts Institute program featuring traditional Japanese theatre, dance, and music. The series celebrated performances by the Classical Performing Arts Friendship Mission of Japan, which toured the United States for five weeks, including events at UCLA. *Kyogen* refers to a form of traditional Japanese comic theatre, characterized by minimal masks and costumes, which originated from Chinese entertainment introduced in the 8th century and evolved as brief…
