Saint Augustine is a 1455 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, depicting Augustine of Hippo, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows Saint Augustine. He wears red robes and holds a book. His face looks tired but wise. A single candle lights his desk. The colors come from hand-painted dyes. Artists mixed these colors fresh for each print. The ink was pressed onto paper or cloth. This shows how early printing mixed with painting. See a similar process in woodcut.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
