About this work

This painting shows a rough, textured scene with muted colors. The image looks like a worn building with a small window and a door, surrounded by uneven walls. The brushstrokes are thick and uneven, giving it a gritty, almost unfinished look. There’s a hint of a person or figure in the lower right corner, but it’s hard to make out. The thick, layered paint suggests the artist built up the surface over time. This technique is called *impasto*, where paint is laid on so heavily it almost stands out from the canvas. Check out *impasto* to see how artists use thick paint to create texture.
