About this work

This work is a long, narrow piece of paper with a grayish texture. It looks like someone rubbed a pencil or crayon over a rough surface, leaving behind a faint, repeating pattern of lines and shapes. The edges are clean and straight, and it’s mounted vertically on a light background. The artist used a technique called *frottage*—that’s French for rubbing—to create this texture. It’s almost like a fingerprint of the surface they pressed against. Check out Giuseppe Penone to see more of his work with simple, textured materials.
