About this work

This is a long, narrow wooden board with three rectangular sections. Each section has a grid of tiny, evenly spaced holes—like a stencil or a sieve. The wood looks worn, and there are two small metal rings on either side, near the top. These boards were used to write Buddhist texts by hand in Nepal. The holes helped monks keep lines straight while copying scriptures. Look up The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more objects like this.
