The Great Screen & Choir, Burgos is a 1927 ink by Albany E. Howarth, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows Burgos Cathedral’s vast choir and the Great Screen behind it. The artist carved tiny details into a metal plate, inked it, and pressed paper onto it. Light and shadow play across stone and wood. Howarth used drypoint here. He scratched directly into the plate with a needle. That leaves a rough edge, called a burr, which holds extra ink. The burr softens lines, making them look fuzzy. Check how Howarth compares to Rembrandt’s etchings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
