This painting shows a repeating pattern of swirling, doughnut-like shapes. The background is a mix of dark gray and muted red, while the shapes themselves are mostly white with some black and gray shadows. The brushstrokes look rough and textured, almost like they were sprayed on. The artist used a fast-drying paint called alkyd resin, which gives the work a gritty, industrial feel. The swirls don’t quite match—some are tighter, others looser—making the whole thing feel a little off-balance. Next, check out Isa Genzken to see how she plays with shapes and materials in other works.
