Untitled is a 1950 oil by Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval, a Contemporary Abstract work, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows a rocky, uneven landscape with sharp gray boulders covered in patches of green and brown. The surface looks rough, almost like the rocks themselves are textured. In the background, a distant hill and faint blue sky give a sense of depth, but the focus stays on the jagged stones up close. The brushstrokes are thick and uneven, almost like the rocks have been scraped and layered. It feels raw, as if the artist wanted the texture to match the rugged scene. This technique is called impasto.
Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (15 October 1885 – 13 April 1972) was an Icelandic painter. He is considered one of the most important artists of Iceland. His son is interior designer Sveinn Kjarval.
