About this work

This painting is a big, flat black square. The edges are clean and sharp, like it was cut out. The background is just white, and the black fills almost the whole space—no shapes, no details, just solid color. The black isn’t painted on. It’s made from pencil on see-through paper layered over another pencil drawing. The artist used a simple trick to make it look so smooth and dark. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build dark tones with just pencil lines.
