About this work

This sketch shows a woman from the back, wearing a long green dress with a floral pattern. The dress has wide, flowing sleeves and a high neckline. Her hair is pulled back neatly, and she’s standing with one arm slightly bent. A smaller sketch of the same dress is drawn on the right side, showing it from the front. The notes in French describe the dress as an evening gown made of emerald-green velvet, fully beaded. The artist even suggests it could be made of leather with a simpler beaded belt. Look up velvet to see how it’s made and why it was popular for fancy clothes.
