Untitled is a 1943 oil by Mervin Jules, a American Folk Art work, held at Museum of Modern Art.
A man sits hunched over a wooden table, pressing something into a blue cloth with both hands. Behind him, a dark room holds a coat hanger, a metal lamp, and a wooden chair. The light hits his face and the table, while the rest stays shadowy. Notice how the brushstrokes are thick and uneven, especially on the cloth and the man’s jacket. The dark background makes the light parts stand out sharply. This painting uses impasto—where paint is laid on thickly.
Mervin Jules (1912–1994) was an American artist, born in Baltimore.
