Untitled is a 1947 watercolor by Paul Delvaux, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This drawing shows a dreamlike room with a black-and-white checkered floor. Two women lie in giant, floating beds—one asleep, one awake and leaning on her elbow. Outside the windows, a moon hangs over a quiet, empty street with a staircase and lamppost. The beds seem to hover, defying gravity, while the women’s faces stay calm. The artist loved mixing real spaces with impossible shapes. Check out Paul Delvaux for more of his strange, quiet scenes.
Paul Delvaux was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination.
