Old and New Mills, Valenciennes is a 1910 ink by Joseph Pennell, depicting Windmill, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a windmill on the left, tall factory chimneys puffing smoke on the right. The dark ink makes the old and new look dramatic. Pennell was an American printmaker who spent years in Europe. He loved showing how cities changed fast in the early 1900s. Look for more of his work at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
