The Guard Gate, Gatun Lock is a 1912 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows a massive construction site. There are large concrete walls and a deep hole in the ground. Cranes and scaffolding are everywhere. Workers are standing on the walls and scaffolding, and some are down in the hole. The sky is cloudy and smoky. In the foreground, there are piles of lumber and other building materials. The overall mood of the painting is one of industry and activity. The painting is held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
