You see a rough, gritty rectangle of paper covered in thick, sandy paint—mostly gray and beige, with a few darker streaks. Hinz mixed carborundum (a hard, sharp mineral) and sand right into the paint. That gives the surface a texture you can almost feel—like coarse concrete or a sidewalk after rain. To see how other artists built surfaces like this, look up impasto.
