About this work

This looks like a carved face in stone. The person wears a tall, pointed hat with carvings on it. Their hair is pulled back, and they have a necklace with a round pendant. The surface is rough, like real stone. The carving shows small details, like the folds in the hat and the texture of the hair. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum for more pieces like this.

The story of this work

Overview

A photograph is mounted on a green card, part of a collection bequeathed by William Kineton Parkes in 1938. Parkes, a novelist, art historian, and librarian known for his work on sculpture, solicited responses from sculptors in the 1920s through questionnaires, now held in the Archive of Art and Design. This image is one of numerous photographs sent to him by sculptors as part of that correspondence.
