About this work

This sketch shows a waterfront scene with grand buildings and boats. The left side has a tall, white, classical-style building with columns and statues on top. In front, three gondolas glide on the water, each with a gondolier standing. To the right, a tall tower rises, and a streetlamp leans over the canal. The artist used loose, quick lines to capture light and shadow. This sketch looks like it was drawn fast, almost like a study. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this.
