Use quieter scale decisions, softer palettes, and placement that respects sleep rather than competing with it.
Calm palettes and smaller scales
Bedrooms benefit from reduced chroma. Works with muted earth tones, desaturated blues, or near-monochrome palettes recede visually and do not stimulate the retina the way high-saturation reds or oranges do. Scale should be modest: a single 50 × 70 cm print or a pair of 30 × 40 cm works above a headboard is sufficient for most bedrooms. Anything larger begins to dominate the room and can disturb rest.
Placement opposite the bed
Hanging a print on the wall opposite the foot of the bed gives the work a natural viewing distance equal to the length of the room—typically 3–4 metres. At that distance, a 60 cm-wide print occupies roughly the same visual angle as a book held at arm’s length, making it readable without strain. This position also avoids the pillow-shadow and headboard-reflection problems that plague over-bed placements.
Beside the window
The wall beside a bedroom window receives soft, indirect daylight for most of the day, which is ideal for works on paper. Place the print so that the window is to its left or right, not directly behind the viewer; back-lighting flattens contrast and makes pigments appear chalky. If the window faces east, the morning sun can be surprisingly intense—use blackout lining or a UV-filtering glaze to prevent fading.
Avoiding glass glare from bedside lamps
Bedside reading lamps create sharp specular highlights on glass or acrylic glazing. If the print must hang within 60 cm of a lamp, choose non-reflective (etché or museum) acrylic rather than standard glass. Alternatively, hang the work outside the lamp’s cone of illumination: a typical bedside lamp throws useful light in a 60-degree arc, so position the print at least 45 cm outside that arc to preserve visibility.
