This is the Shrine of Saint Anne and the Holy Kinship, a carved wooden devotional panel from around 1450, by an unknown master working in the late Gothic tradition. The panel is built for slow looking, every inch of its gilded surface rewards the patient eye. It was likely made for close, private contemplation, where the viewer was expected to lean in and discover.

Most viewers see the central enthroned figure and the two flanking clusters of holy relatives and move on. But the carver hid a second gathering behind the foreground. Look through the tracery arches behind Saint Anne and you will find smaller figures waiting back there, a heavenly multitude suggested by the shallowest of relief. And down at the front, a child cradles a tiny animal. It looks like a tender detail, but in Holy Kinship iconography a lamb marks a child destined for sacrifice.

The painting's technique is a tour de force of compression: the black-and-white checkerboard floor implies a receding interior, while the carved canopy spires and the painted blue-and-gold frame integrate the sculpture into a total liturgical object. An inscription at the base of the throne may once have named a donor or workshop.

The shrine belongs to a time when devotion was physical, when the act of looking closely was itself a form of prayer. What else might be hiding in the gold?
