Woodland Stream by Huet, Paul

Woodland Stream, by Paul Huet, circa 1840, lives at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is the opposite of a crime scene. No theft, no ransom note, no protestor with a soup can. Its most dramatic moment came when a collector simply bought it and gave it to a museum.

Huet was a French Romantic who went looking for the sublime not in shipwrecks or avalanches, but in the dappled quiet of a forest. Look at the patches of white water and the mossy rocks along the bank. The whole painting is built from thin glazes, layer after translucent layer, so the light seems to come from inside the canvas. The signature is tucked into the foliage on the right, small enough to miss for years.

The painting was made around 1840, when French artists were abandoning classical ruins for real rural landscapes. Huet never became a household name. His work passed through private hands in the early twentieth century and eventually landed in the National Gallery, where it has stayed out of the headlines ever since.

Some paintings are famous for being attacked. This one is famous for being left alone. What do you think it would feel like to stand in front of it, knowing its whole history is just undisturbed silence?
