Pavement, Cairo by Sargent, John Singer

John Singer Sargent painted Pavement, Cairo in 1891, stepping away from the society portraits that made him famous to capture a quiet Middle Eastern interior. The painting belongs to a private collection and is one of nearly 900 oils he produced during a lifetime of travel.

At first the eye moves through sunlit arches and across a richly patterned floor. The architecture is grand, but no figure occupies it. The painting seems to be an empty study of light and geometry.

Then, tucked in the lower right, a small strip of red and white woven fabric lies on the stone. It is a rug, the kind someone sits on. In a work by an artist known for painting people, this single object quietly testifies to a human presence that has just stepped away.

Sargent painted the scene with broken brushstrokes that dissolve stone and tile into flashes of color. The rug fragment receives the same flickering treatment, a small domestic note inside a monumental setting. What do you think the person who left it there was doing?

John Singer Sargent traveled to Cairo in 1891. He was the most famous portrait painter of his age, but here he painted no people at all. The light pulls you through grand arches and into the shadows. All the architecture funnels your eye toward the patterned floor. Then, in the corner, an object the sunlight barely touches. A strip of red and white patterned fabric, laid on the stone. It is a rug. Someone has been sitting here, in this quiet doorway.
