John Singer Sargent's 'Street in Venice' (1882) shows what most visitors to the city never painted: a quiet backstreet off the Calle Larga dei Proverbi, far from the Grand Canal's grand facades. The woman is likely Gigia Viani, a Venetian model. What matters here is not her identity but her experience.

Look at the two men in the shadows to her left. Sargent crops the scene so tightly you almost miss them, but the painting is built around their gaze. Her eyes are down. Her skirt kicks forward with a hurried step. The broad, Impressionist brushwork that blurs the stone walls also makes her white skirt feel like it is actually moving.

Sargent painted this during a period when he was turning away from formal society portraits, a move that would become urgent after the scandal of 'Madame X' two years later. This is one of several Venetian backstreet scenes he made, each ignoring monuments in favor of edge-of-the-city life. The painting passed through private collections before entering the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

The architecture is not the point. The point is what it feels like to walk down a narrow street and know someone is watching. Sargent gives that feeling a shape in oil on wood, and it has not aged a day.
