Old House at East Hampton by Hassam, Childe
Childe Hassam painted "Old House at East Hampton" in 1916, at the height of his work on Long Island, where he returned summer after summer to capture the region's light on weathered wood and fresh paint. It lives today in a public collection.
Most viewers see the blue shingles, the pink blossoms, and the dappled greenery and move on. Look again at the front door: it stands open. Inside, a staircase rises into the shadow of the house. You cannot see where it leads, only that it goes somewhere.
Hassam was an American Impressionist who helped bring French plein-air ideas to American collectors. He produced thousands of works, from New York cityscapes to coastal New England, but this East Hampton series shows a gentler obsession: the way afternoon light shapes a quiet, inhabited place.
