This portrait of Elizabeth Mason was painted in 1798. Gilbert Stuart painted more than 1,000 portraits in his career. Including the first six US presidents, and George Washington. His George Washington now appears on the dollar bill. Stuart portraits became highly sought after by collectors. In 1941, The Cleveland Museum of Art bought this one. It has been on public view ever since.
