Girl at the Piano by Jacob Maris

Jacob Maris painted Girl at the Piano in 1890, and it now hangs in the Rijksmuseum. Maris was a cornerstone of the Hague School, known best for sweeping Dutch landscapes and official portraits of the royal House of Orange. This intimate canvas is a departure: a single child, seen from behind, alone at an upright piano.

The first thing you notice is the dress. Maris laid down thick, visible strokes of white oil paint, building the fabric with a confidence that feels almost sculptural. That luminous white pulls your eye through the dark surrounding room. The second thing is her hand: resting lightly on the keys, not playing, just present. Her face is barely visible, turned toward the sheet music, leaving the moment private.

Maris studied under J.A.B. Stroebel and, alongside his brothers Willem and Matthijs, helped define the moody, tonal language of the Hague School. His landscapes made him one of the most influential Dutch painters of the late nineteenth century. This smaller, quieter work shows the same atmospheric control applied indoors.
