Clouds and Water by Arthur Dove

Arthur Dove’s "Clouds and Water" (1930) is an oil painting that distills a coastal landscape into rhythmic shapes. It hangs in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and is the work of the man often called the first American abstract painter.

The painting rewards the patient eye. At center-right, a small orange sail confirms the scene as a seascape and not pure abstraction. Dove uses it to anchor the scale against the monumental clouds above. The real surprise sits at the far right edge, a tiny second boat, partially cropped from view.
