清 程正揆 江山臥遊圖 卷|Dream Landscape by Cheng Zhengkui (Chinese, 1604–1676)

Dream Landscape is a Qing dynasty handscroll painted in 1674 by Cheng Zhengkui, a scholar-artist who lived through the collapse of the Ming dynasty. The scroll is ink and color on silk, and it was designed for an intimate, private act: one person unrolling it section by section, traveling through mountains without leaving a desk.

The first thing to notice is the calligraphy at the right edge. The title translates to Dream Landscape for Lying Down Travel, a specific 17th-century practice called wò yóu, armchair travel. After the Ming fell in 1644, decades of upheaval made real journeys dangerous or impossible. A handscroll became the substitute. What looks like empty silk in the center is mist; the unpainted void does the work of atmosphere. Your mind fills in what the brush left out.

Cheng Zhengkui was born in Hubei province and studied under Dong Qichang, the most influential painter-theorist of the late Ming. He painted this scroll at around seventy, using a dry brush that gives the rock faces a calligraphic, almost written texture. The pine trees on the right, a traditional symbol of moral uprightness, are a scholar-painter's self-portrait in botanical form, standing straight after everything fell.

This is a refugee's landscape. Not a record of a place, but a place built for someone who could not go anywhere else.
