Sunrise by Claude Lorrain
This is *Sunrise* by Claude Lorrain, painted in 1646. Before Lorrain, the sun in European landscape painting was a timid thing, a symbol, a disc on the horizon. He walked outside at dawn, looked directly into the light, and found a way to build a whole painting around it. The sky here occupies nearly half the canvas, graduating from warm gold near the horizon to pale blue above through layer after layer of thin glaze. The result was so credible, so atmospherically true, that it changed what landscape painting was allowed to be.
Lorrain called this effect *contre-jour*, painting into the light. The dark framing trees on both sides act as a tunnel of shadow, forcing your eye straight into the bright center. A shepherd gestures toward a distant castle on the hill, giving you a story to follow. Scattered sheep in the foreground catch the first sun on their wool. Every element serves the sky; the figures are small because the true subject is the air itself.
Born Claude Gellée in the independent Duchy of Lorraine around 1600, he spent nearly his entire career in Rome. By the end of the 1630s he was the most sought-after landscapist in Italy, commanding fees so high that forgers began copying his work while he was still alive. His patrons included popes, kings, and cardinals, and his atmospheric light became the standard against which later landscape painters, from Turner to the Hudson River School, measured themselves.
A painting like this one, built on subtle gradations of tone rather than dramatic incident, asks you to slow down. Let your eye travel from the rocky bank in the lower left across the hazy valley, up through the golden center, and out into the cool upper sky. The weather in 1646 is right there, still glowing.

1646. Most painters still built their light in the studio. One man walked outside at dawn and simply painted what he saw. Look into that sky. The gold graduates into blue, no hard line. This was new. Contre-jour, painting directly into the sun. Rivals called it a trick. Patrons fought to own one. That shepherd points you toward a castle, a world beyond the frame. Claude Lorrain put the sun at the center and changed landscape forever.
