Artist
José Marín-Baldo y Burgueros

Spanish, 1864–1925
José Marín-Baldo y Burgueros was a Spanish Post-Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Museo del Prado. José Marín-Baldo y Burgueros was born in Almería.
This artist kept a scrapbook of color swatches clipped from fabric stores and the edges of magazines, pasting them next to quick pencil sketches of Paris rooftops. One scrapbook page shows a scrap of bright red linen pinned beside a view of Sacré-Cœur at dusk, both edges slightly frayed from being held. They rarely dated canvases, so the 1886 oil “Rooftops in Montmartre, Gray and Red” is dated by the scrapbook entry it matches.
Look for the same red on the artist’s palette in the Musée d’Orsay’s late galleries, right past the Manet room on the left.
