The Le Nain brothers were three French painters, Antoine (c. 1600 to 1648), Louis (c. 1603 to 1648), and Mathieu (c. 1607 to 1677), born in Laon and active together in Paris. They worked closely and often signed only 'Le Nain' without a first name, which has made attribution to individual hands difficult. They are best known for genre scenes of the French peasantry: sober, dignified depictions of rural families, meals, and labourers, as well as religious subjects and portraits.
Antoine and Louis became founding members of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648. Their restrained realism set them apart from the grander Baroque current of their time.
