Anthonis Moor

Anthonis Moor is a Byzantine icon painting artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Brukenthal National Museum.

This 16th-century portraitist painted stern-faced nobles and officials with careful beards and stiff ruffs, leaving us two surviving works. Anthonis Moor’s Philip al II-lea al Spaniei shows Spain’s king in a dark coat and white collar, while Bărbat cu barbă roșcată captures a red-bearded man in a plain black hat. Who wore those ruffs and who painted them? Look closer at the hats in the collection.
