Artist

Gang Jinhui

Gang Jinhui is a Chinese Orthodox School artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

This artist painted Bamboo around the mid-1800s, a work that follows a long tradition of ink brushwork focused on single plants or paired motifs. The scroll keeps the living plant’s shape while letting ink tones do most of the talking, from dark nodes to pale sheaths. Look closely and you can trace each stroke’s direction, a habit common in literati painting of the Qing period.

Next, tap the scroll titled Bamboo to see how the artist balanced weight and air in a single stalk.
