Habib Mohammadi kept a studio above a clock repair shop in Tehran, where he’d paint with one eye on his watch and one on the light slanting through the high window. His Portrait of Jalil Ziapour (1955) catches the artist Ziapour mid-smile, paintbrush in hand, as if he’s about to dip it back in turpentine. Look for the loose brushstrokes on the jacket, Mohammadi painted it wet-on-wet so the colors blur just enough to feel alive.
