Khem Karan was a painter active in the imperial atelier of the Mughal emperor Akbar, who reigned from 1556 to 1605. He worked in the court workshop that produced illustrated manuscripts, where Indian and Persian artists collaborated to develop the early Mughal style. He is named among the painters of Akbar's studio and contributed to its illustrated projects.
A signed painting attributed to him, Prince Riding an Elephant, survives and reflects the court's interest in portraits of prized animals. His work combines fine detail with the synthesis of Persian technique and Indian observation characteristic of Mughal painting.
